printed in Germany with love

When love and skill work together,
expect a masterpiece

John Ruskin

For many years, worldwide juries have treated us with awards, medals and commendations. We are thankful for this. It spurs us on.

We owe our success in creative competitions to our excellent writers and designers. It is also due perhaps a bit to our »we-can-do-more« attitude, perhaps a little to our »we-make-the-impossible-possible«. Yet the applause, recognition and admiration go to the writers and designers who frequently invest their time, their weekends and their holidays for far longer than one year to transform an exceptional idea into an outstanding book at Schmidt. We thank them for this with all our hearts!

Our success in competitions in which production quality plays a key role is owed to our parent company Universitätsdruckerei H. Schmidt in Mainz. Sometimes, »children« learning to fly forget to mention their »parents« and to thank them. Yet all of the recognition we receive for the beauty of our books, the admiration for specially woven, caressable binding materials, the fascination for a true HANDbook with a carrying handle, the enviable irritation at a book with an open spine, hologram cardboard covers and blue thread in the stitching do not go to us, but to the staff of the Universitätsdruckerei and their suppliers who even cater to our wishes when all other providers would cry »no way!«

The Universitätsdruckerei is united with us in the philosophy that »nothing is impossible« and we are separated only by a stairway. This means that we can watch when the 45-gram India paper for Pachanga gorgeously printed in Aniva natural colours is put through the five-colour machine by expert hands. We can get an idea of the vast amounts of gold colour needed to give the sheets of Blicktricks or the golden edition Kribbeln im Kopf an illustrious gloss without smudging or powder dullness. We can assure ourselves of the brilliant reproduction of the illustrations in Freistil and also that the Universitätsdruckerei in its completely energy-renovated building only uses fossil fuels for heating in absolutely exceptional cases and uses FSC-certified* paper out of ecological and social responsibility whenever possible.
The printing house is FSC and PEFC-certified and EMAS validated.

The reputation of the Universitätsdruckerei has reached as far as Switzerland, the USA and France. The staff members of the printing house speak English, welcome your questions and take pleasure in working with German Gründlichkeit.
