We are always being asked how a book comes into being at Schmidt. In this case, it went like this: Judith Schalansky came to portfolio day [see page …] and returned to Berlin with a preliminary agreement. After five months of daily emails, the book was published in March 2006. Exactly one year later, Judith Schalansky accepted silver on the stage of the ADC, a week after that a magna cum laud degree from the FH Potsdam [for another great project]. a second joint book project in 2008. Not all book stories run as smoothly, but sometimes dreams do come true because it can move mountains, make the impossible possible or liberate a font from the dust of centuries and a bad image … for decades, black letters have wrongly been considered Nazi fonts, for use only on pub signs, the labels of old-fashioned liquors or in the headings of time-honoured newspapers. Then Judith Schalansky arrived, saw the diversity of forms and beauty of the characters and won over any doubts with her scheme. have found admirers from New York to Tokyo. She compiled 300 of the most beautiful Gothic character sets and positioned them opposite playful studies in form. In this way, she focuses our vision on the detail, flow and form of the font and creates ornamental patterns of self-contained power and beauty. To make her love contagious, she enclosed a CD in the book with 130 fonts for free private [also restricted commercial] use, so that you, too, can soon say: Fraktur mon Amour!
